Victoria, Australia – Residents in parts of Victoria are being urged to boil their tap water before drinking after a dead rodent was discovered in the Shoreham Reservoir during a routine maintenance inspection. The advisory, issued just before midnight AEDT, affects the communities of Flinders, Point Leo and Shoreham.
Authorities have confirmed that water testing is underway. While E. coli itself may not be harmful, its presence suggests the possibility of other harmful bacteria that could cause illness. Low water pressure and interruptions to the supply can lead to bacterial build-up, increasing the risk of contamination.
Residents are advised to boil tap water used for drinking, preparing food, cleaning fruits and vegetables, brushing teeth, making ice, and preparing infant formula. The same precaution applies to water given to pets and livestock. Bottled water remains safe to consume and use for these purposes.
Those who consume unboiled water may experience symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, headaches or other gastro-like conditions. Health authorities have particularly warned that infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and immuno-compromised individuals may face a higher risk of illness.
Emergency drinking water is currently available at Flinders Civic Hall, 54 Cook Street, Flinders and at Shoreham Recreation Reserve on Cliff Road, Shoreham. Authorities have also advised that water stock levels may be affected by the ongoing situation.
An update is expected at 5pm AEDT today or earlier if there are significant changes. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by checking the VicEmergency website or contacting the VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226.
