The Water Mouse is popularly known as False Water Rat. It is small in size and grows up to 10 cm. It has a hunched body, small eyes, and small rounded ears. This species of mice have silky fur that is water-resistant. The adults in this species are slate-grey in color but the belly portion is pure white. As the rodents grow older, the fur changes to grey-brown with white flecks. The tail of this rodent species is sparsely haired and lacks white tip. The adult Water Mice have similarities with House Mouse in looks. It is common to find Water Mouse in areas adjacent to freshwater, wetland, coastal salt marsh and mangroves. This nocturnal rodent dwells underground. They build nests in hollows located close to high tide mark. These feed on different crab species, small lobsters, snails and marine shellfish.
