Common Wasp

Humans are in close contact with Common Wasps! Vespula Vulgaris is a familiar social insect and is quite large. It has a large waist between the thorax and abdomen. The creatures in this species have bright yellow and black bands throughout the body. It has two pairs of long wings with a pair of antennae. Its sting is in the abdomen. The wasps in this species grow up to 2cm long. It gets distinguished from other species for its anchor shaped mark on its face. The queens are the reproductive females and larger than the workers, males and non-reproductive females. These wasps construct their nests underground but also build the nests in wall cavities, attics, hollow of trees and other secure areas.

The larvae of these wasps feed on insects brought by the workers while the adults require high-energy sugar foods, i.e., fruit, nectar, etc. The sting of these wasps can be quite painful, and repetitive stings need immediate medical attention. Only workers of this species can sting. These wasps are common in gardens, meadows, and woodlands. The underground nests are of paper. These wasps create nuisance and havoc in outer spaces towards the end of September ruining your picnic.
