A Native Drone Fly is brightly colored with large strange spotted eyes. Its body is black and orange striped. The adults can grow up to 10 mm long. These flies make a droning noise like a bee that gives them this name. The flies have four black stripes on the thorax and the abdomen is banded and spotted. These are usually found hovering over flowers. The females lay their eggs in drains, sewage and other stagnant water.
