The Fall Armyworms are the larvae stage of small brownish gray-moths. These creatures are potential threats for grass pastures as well as cereal crops. The armyworms infest the crops but when the weather gets hotter and drier, the moths move to greener pastures. The caterpillars grow up to 30-40 mm in length. Tree pale strips on the body distinguish the armyworms from other caterpillars. The female moths lay up to 2000 eggs on the grass blades. Within few days the eggs hatch and the tiny caterpillars come out which are green colored with a black head. These newborn creatures feed on the grasses for over 14 days, and within this time the colors change to brown from green with reddish brown head and white lines on its side. You can hear the munching sound in the heavily infested lawns. These creatures are nocturnal and remain active at nights. In the daytime, these crawl into a silk-lined burrow. If the brown patches in your lawn get bigger every day, it is the sign of armyworm infestation. The armyworms feed on the grass blades and the stems. These creatures also attack leaves of other plants as well.
